Mountaineering in Patagonia is very weather dependent, especially in its southern parts around Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine. Fortunately, several websites provide useful weather forecasts to try and aim for that rare window of good weather.
Meteoexploration.com
The best offer is certainly that of Meteo Exploration. It gives forecasts for a number of summits along the Andes, from Ojos del Salado in the N to Monte Sarmiento in Tierra del Fuego
Forecasts for Cerro Torre can be accessed here and there are detailed forecasts for several of the volcanoes in the lakes region.
Other websites
Other websites offer interesting forecasts:
- Snow forecast for Cerro Catedral (Bariloche) (si also forecasts for other resorts on the website).
- Chicureo offers pages comparing various forecasts for Pucón (Volcán Villarrica, Lanín...), for Puerto Montt (Volcán Osorno) and for Punta Arenas (Tierra del Fuego).
- Argentina’s official forecasts for Bariloche, Esquel, El Calafate y Ushuaia
- The US NOAA offers forecasts for any place on Earth. In fact, its forecasts are the ones used by Meteo Exploration (described above). To obtain a forecast you must type in the latitude and longitude coordinates (which you can obtain from the description of the summit, hut or access on the interactive guidebook) and then select an 84 or 180h forecast (where it says “meteogram”). Coordionates for Fitz Roy are -73.043057 W and -49.271115 S
