[Work in Progress] Expedition summary of the French Ile-de-France Espoir Mountaineering team in the Tatry mountains during winter 2024.
Timeline
We spent the first 3 days, from Sunday to Tuesday in the Murovaniec Hut. On Tuesday afternoon, we descended back to Zakopane. The next morning we drove to Morskie Oko parking and took the carriages & hiked up the hut, and spent the next 3 days climbing mixed routes around the hut.
Routes & Summits
- Czuba nad Karbem, 1896m
- Mnich, 2068m
Mountain Huts
- Murowaniec (https://murowaniec.com/)
- Morskie Oko (https://schroniskomorskieoko.pl/en)
Getting there
We rented a 9-seats van from Paris. Be careful that most car rental companies do not allow driving in Poland, make sure to read the contract thoroughfully.
Equipment
- technical ice axes & technical crampons
- dry 60m ropes
- ground screws: these were something we never used before but appeared useful
- ice screws: only used a few very small ones (11cm & 13cm): there are a few ice routes but on most mixed routes you don’t need them
- nuts: one complete set per team
- cams: one and a half complete C4 set per team + small Aliens ones
- a few pitons (hard ones!) & some cordelette
- avalanche kit
- satellite phone (although we were told that mountain rescue is not as organised as it is in the Alps)
Note: we decided not to take the skis as we were told that local mountaineers often do the approaches by walk and that skis were more added comfort. As we were quite tight on room in the van, we left them at home. Missing the skis did not prevent us from getting anywhere, although it would have made some approaches maybe slightly faster. (Still we wouldn’t recommended to carry them there, except if some specific ski days are planned.)
