Weather

sunny, very hot, few clouds. Summits stayed in the clouds most of the day

Conditions

We started Saturday midday, walked in the strong sun up to ~1900m where the snow started, and we put the skis on.
The snow at this time of day was very soft, so we took quite some time to go to the hut, especially those on split-boards. The hut is behind a moraine, so we didn't see it, and went a bit too high, but we got to ski a bit that day.

Sunday we left too late, the snow was frozen on the way up so that was ok, it got a bit soft in the steep bit under the Gruberscharte which was ok in skis as there were some tracks, but very hard for Sasha and his split-board.

We wanted to go to the Grosser Bärenkopf via the north face, but it had been (and still was) in the clouds since sunrise, so the snow was still very frozen, while the snow under the Gruberscharte was already getting soft, so we turned around.

Snow was very nice until ~2200, then got very soft, but still skiable until ~1900, where it was too covered in rocks to continue.

190020"dirty" snow, mostly from previous avalanches
2100very soft, barely freezing at night
2500good freeze at night, nice to ski on in the morning
3100hard frozen snow by the wind on the pass, but good in other places

Access_comment

Train to Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse, then taxi to Fuchs. Same on the way back

Hut_comment

The hut is very comfortable, well insulated, but without heating or cooking possibilities (make sure to bring pans and gas)

Commentaires personnels

Next time we'll bring bikes, as there's a good track up to 1700m. A better alarm clock for the morning, and additional pans would have been useful too, we wasted lots of time in the evening melting snow.

Had one of the best Kaiserschmarrnin Gasthof Tauernhaus in Ferleiten on the way back :)
