You want to add a new language on camptocamp and you feel yourself motivated to handle this project? Hooray, this article describes the process to add a new language.
Step 1 : Translate the interface Few weeks, depending on your translations skills
Simply contact dev@camptocamp.org, they will add the new language to Transifex, our translation tools. Follow these guidelines to start translating all messages present in the interface. Once you have translated a part of them, you can iterate with dev@camptocamp.org to see them on a demo site.
Once you have translated 90% of the messages, the new language will be added in the official interface language list. Things can remain like that, and it is a pretty fast process. But having only the interface without the content would be a pity. So let's continue.
Step 2 : Know how Camptocamp works Around one month, depending on your contribution rate
As Camptocamp is a wiki, a mandatory point to have a content's language is the ability to moderate it. If you're willing to, you can be this moderator, it will be a little bit longer, but nothing impossible.
First of all, start to translate key articles. As the new language is not yet available, you must save them on computer. The objective of this is double: help you to understand how camptocamp works; and help future contributors of the new language. Here is the list :
Meanwhile, contribute to Camptocamp. Add new data, make some clean-up, discuss with other contributors... You can contribute to any existing language you want. Contributing to content itself can be tough when it is not in your mother tongue, but there is a lot of other ways to contribute: schemas, associations, images, document creation with only metadata... Try to contribute to every hidden corner of Camptocamp. At the end of this step, you must feel comfortable with all key concepts and tools of Camptocamp:

- markdown
- forum
- ...
Step 3 Few days/weeks, up to you
Once translated key articles and reached 500 contributions, send a mail to board@camptocamp.org. After a short validation process (and probably a slightly longer delay for updating the database), the language will be added. Start using it, save your translated articles and add content. For this step, you will be granted moderation rights. You also need to translate the last 10% of the interface (let's start a language with 100% of the interface translated).
Once you'll feel yourself ready, the language will be opened for edition to everybody. Congratulations!
Step 4 Hopefully, never
If one day, you want to stop your involvment in Camptocamp, that's perfectly fine. But as we need to have at least one moderator per language, if you were the only one, then the content will be frozen and will not be editable anymore, until a new moderator will be found. So do not hesitate to speak about camptocamp in your local community.

After reading step 3 and the mentioned 500 contributions, I was wondering what kind of contributions we’re talking about. Are comments or editions also considered as contributions?

The number of contributions required is an order of magnitude, and corresponds roughly to the number of lines in the ‹ whatsnew › of the user : editions are of course contributions, comments are not.
As for now, the technical process of adding a new language is still not completly mastered, but hopefully soon (@CharlesB ) . I know that you are helping for slovenian, and @hemind is helping for chinese : thank you for your investment !
