Semi-automatic corrections in the guidebook

This article is used to set up the semi-automatic corrections made in the topoguide. See the French version, that may be more up to date. You can find inspiration on its equivalent on the English Wikipedia.

An example of correction,
with validation of the operator of the bot
An example of [correction](https://www.camptocamp.org/routes/diff/852096/fr/1877544/1877980), <br/>with validation of the [operator](https://www.camptocamp.org/profiles/286726/fr) of the [bot](https://www.camptocamp.org/profiles/940299/fr)

Operating instructions

Principle

The bots of Camptocamp run automatic corrections, be it on recent modifications as well as on a list of arbitrary documents. The aim is to allow anybody to add automatic corrections. Feel free to suggest a new correction on the forum.

How to add a new automatic correction ?

Simply edit this article, and add a line in the appropriate section. Each correction should meet the following format:

  • Start with four spaces
  • Containing two blocks separated by two caracters ">>"
  • Each block can be one or more words
  • The left part shoud start and finish with an alphanumeric caracter. Parenthesis, ponctuation signs and other numbers/letters will not provide the expected change.

Inside a section, for more clarity, do not hesitate to separate different blocks by four hyphens ---- between two empty lines.

How it works

Take for example the following line: a misstake >> a mistake

The bot will search in the text all the occurences of a misstake (excluding the spaces before and after) considering only full words. For example, sucha misstake will not be considered.

Then, each of these occurences will be replaced by a mistake, excluding the spaces before and after.

Which corrections should I add ?

The idea is not to keep an exhaustive list of spelling mistakes, but to list those commonly encountered on camptocamp in order to help maintenance. A few examples, with the logic that decides whether to add the test or not.

  • butress >> buttress : very safe, and very useful, no doubt we add it.
  • assathinations >> assassinations : safe, but useless: not only is the word uncommon on C2C, but the probability of making this mistake is zero.
  • march >> March: unsafe, because march can be a mistake for the month March, but could also be the verb to march, even if it is unlikely in a topoguide. Indeed, this is to be avoided because it will cause more maintenance for false positives than it saves for legitimate cases.

Work in progress: provide more examples following these ones in French.

Generally speaking, several brains are better than one: if in doubt, ask the question on the forum.

Note that you can use Google to know if a word is used a lot on camptocamp or not.

Forbidden caracters

The following caracters are forbidden :

  • The braces: { and }
  • The square brackets: [ and ]
  • The parentheses: ( and )
  • The point: .
  • The circumflex only: ^ (but accented letters are allowed: â)
  • The dollar sign: $
  • The star, question mark and plus sign: *, ? and +
  • The anti-slash: \

Furthermore, the double caracter >> is restricted to deparating two blocks.

Important notice to bot operators

If an inappropriate correction is added in this page, and you apply it on the topoguide, you will be responsible, and you will have to go and correct the error. It is therefore strongly advised to follow the changes made on this page before any cleanup campaign.

wanna >> want to
won't >> will not

Cardinal points

The corrections on cardinal points in english are suspended: there must be a debate and approuval of a (large enough) community of native speakers.

This section allows to "catch" some cases of false positives. In order to correctly manage URLs, these catches exceptionally contain the forbidden characters . and \.

For research’s sake, it’s better to keep the alphabetical order in the right column (the column to the right) because it’s easier to look up the proper spelling - since we know it - and to find the various misspellings in one place, than the opposite. The French version of this article even specifies this fact:

L’ordre alphabétique est tenu dans la partie droite. Par exemple, la correction aps >> pas sera classée sous P.

L’idée n’est pas de tenir la liste exhaustive des fautes d’orthographe, mais de lister celles rencontrées couramment sur camptocamp

Subject :

are'nt >> are not

I guess the following was meant :

aren't >> are not

(although the first option is also a valid correction LOL)

Something else : « aren’t » is just colloquial (not slang), it’s not a mistake to correct - on a mountain addict site -

And then there’s also « aren’t you » which gives « are not you » instead of « are you not »… But let’s forget this one because the question form « aren’t you » is probly rare.

Subject

it's >> it is

This is a valid correction IF « it is » was meant - which is very often NOT the case - so many speakers (even native speakers) making the mistakes

it's

instead of

its

or

its'

Aw, who really cares…

I guess some people think that by copy-pasting Wikipedia, it should be good enough…

It’s like using Google translate for climbing jive… it doesn’t really work

Wikipedia has the rule to avoid contractions:

Avoid contractions, which have little place in formal writing. For example, write cannot instead of can’t.

It makes sense to me to follow the same rule on C2C, but we can remove the corrections on contractions if we are worried about questions (which do not occure that much in topos).

Just who do you think you are ? You’re the one that starts the mess… so please fix it up yourself (or not).

Il faut copier/coller les rattrapages qui sont a la fin de la section, c’est le B-A-ba du copieur/colleur.
